On The “Ugly Betty” Set With America Ferrera In Victoria Beckham Collection

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

Ugly Betty is in its last season, but judging by this picture of America Ferrera as Betty Suarez…Betty gets a sexy make-over.

This picture is from an episode titled “Million Dollar Smile” which aired in the US last week.

Betty wore a very familiar VB LBD which we’ve seen on Jennifer Hudson, Blake Lively and VB herself.

Victoria has said that her dresses are every type of woman. America and Jennifer Hudson prove that VB’s dresses aren’t just for the size 0 brigade.

I love this dress on America, especially as she’s the only one to add a belt to the look.

Patrica Fields is the stylist on “Ugly Betty”.

Do you think we will get to see Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte wearing Victoria Beckham’s dresses in “Sex And The City 2″?

Balmain’s New Gal, Alt’s First Cover, Dispatches From The Rumor Mill, And More…

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

Emmanuelle Alt’s ascension to the throne of Paris Vogue meant that her former employers—Balmain and Isabel Marant—were left without a stylist for their shows. Christophe Decarnin (left) has officially filled the position: longtime Helmut Lang stylist Melanie Ward is doing the honors for the label this season. [WWD]And speaking of Alt, the editrix has revealed her first cover star: Gisele. “There was no question,” she tells British Vogue. The Brazilian supe wears Dolce & Gabbana and was shot by Inez and Vinoodh. [Vogue U.K. via Fashionista]The rumor mill is churning again, using its new favorite echo chamber: Twitter. Someone at @KenzoPR has heard—and publicized—that “a certain designer at an established French house,” one whose CEO has just left, is being replaced after this season by “someone major” who “moved away from design the last couple of [years] but stayed in fashion.” [Racked]And meanwhile in London, the Telegraph’s Hilary Alexander drops backstage at Giles to chat with designer Giles Deacon and Katie Grand. This season’s look is austerity, Giles-style—which means austerity with plenty of goat fur. [Telegraph]

2010 Shanghai Film Festival – Part II

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

For the closing ceremony of the Shanghai Film Festival Michelle Yeoh wore a stunning orange one shoulder Atelier Versace Fall 2007 gown.

This was my favourite of her two looks during this festival.

I love the colour, the detail and the gold accessories. Definitely BDOTW worthy.

French actress Isabelle Huppert looked effortless wearing a white plunging striped gown which she paired with an ivory clutch.

Claire Danes also opted for a bright colour wearing a red halter gown with a mermaid hem.

Usually Claire opted for neutral colours so this pop of colour is most welcome.

Nicki Minaj In The Blonds – “Moment 4 Life” Music Video

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Last week MTV premiered Nicki Minaj’s new video for her latest single “Moment 4 Life.”

The flamboyant singer wore a look from The Blonds Spring 2011 collection.

The turquoise goddess chiffon gown with crystal accents played perfectly into the Cinderella themed music video.

The video starts with Nicki wearing the chiffon gown, with a black wig and a bejeweled headpiece whilst sitting in front of an ornate dressing table before the song begins.

She then goes onto make several costume changes before the wedding scene with Drake.

The Grammy Awards takes place in 2 weeks time. I’m sure Nicki will take to the red carpet wearing a look which will be much more over the top than this.

“Robin Hood” Press Conference – Cate Blanchett In Alexander McQueen

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

The new “Robin Hood” movie stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.

The two stars were in London last week for a press conference.

I was excited to see Cate wearing an Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2010 printed dress.

I’m taking it as a sign that she’s warming up to be the first to wear the Alexander McQueen Fall 2010 collection at Cannes Film Festival, or possibly the Costume Institute Gala which she’s rumoured to attend tonight.

“Robin Hood” will be screened at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival on 12 May *counts fingers* in 9 days time.

If she doesn’t wear McQueen I’m sure it will be something equally breath-taking and spectacular.

The count-down begins.

Jewels in the crown

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

With fashion heavyweights creating knockout pieces, jewellery is big again — literally and figuratively, writes Natasha Silva-Jelly.

Accessories, particularly fabulous statement jewellery pieces – real and faux – are huge news in fashion right now. At the recent international collections in Paris, glittering gems piled high up the arm and layered around the neck threatened to distract from the clothes, especially at Lanvin. And at the recent Lisa Ho winter runway show in Sydney, eye-popping neckpieces and cuffs were also a standout.

Perhaps it’s a hangover from the GFC but so important has eye candy become on planet fashion that many designers and luxury brands now create full-scale jewellery collections in a bid to provide a more affordable entry into their world. Locally Jayson Brunsdon, Little Joe by Gail Elliott and sass & bide have all launched jewellery collections in the past year.

Advertisement: Story continues below

And it’s a similar story in the rarified sphere of fine jewellery, where collaborations with fashion designers, industrial architects (Australian super-designer Marc Newson recently created a necklace for Boucheron featuring a whopping 2000 gemstones) and even celebrities are adding a hip injection and helping shake off the elitist tag.

In a closely guarded secret deal, Australian fashion designer Michelle Jank, 29, was hand-picked by fine jeweller Fairfax & Roberts earlier this year and asked to create a bespoke jewellery collection. The resulting array was unveiled last week in the lush new Parisian-style Sydney store in Castlereagh Street.

For Jank, who divides her time between London and Paris and who has long collected rare vintage trinkets from around the world and transformed them into dazzling one-off creations, the deal presents the opportunity to work with semi-precious stones for the first time.

“I love the idea of couture and having special pieces in the world, especially when we are bombarded with so many mass-market things. It’s beautiful to be able to work on a handcrafted piece,” says Jank, whose debut collection for Fairfax & Roberts features three pieces – a ring, a neckpiece and a bracelet created using round-cut brilliant diamonds, emerald-cut aquamarines and glamorous pink tourmalines.

“I was briefed to a point but then I did sketches – the collection is inspired by Dior ball gowns from the 1950s,” she says.

Signed to create three or four collections a year, Jank’s pieces are big, bold and in keeping with her vintage signature.

Fairfax & Roberts managing director Morris Symonds says Jank’s appointment signifies a new artistic direction for the company, which was established in Sydney in 1958.

“As one of Australia’s leading creative talents, Michelle Jank is the personification of eclectic elegance,” Symonds says.

But be warned, such precious one-off pieces don’t come cheap. While Jank will no doubt help attract a younger, funkier customer to the decadent (read: ridiculously expensive) world of Fairfax & Roberts, her designs will still set you back a cool $36,000 for the ring, $51,000 for the bracelet and $160,000 for the neckpiece.

Nevertheless, Jank says she loves the idea of coming into fine jewellery and rewriting how things are done.

“There’s an eccentric eclecticism that [Fairfax & Roberts] are trying to achieve, which is very much in the spirit of what I am and who I am,” she says. “I love the idea of doing things slightly differently and not by the book. I am obsessed with big-format things. I am not a huge fan of small, precious things; I appreciate them but I like to see something quite powerful.”

She believes a transformation is taking place in the jewellery industry. “It’s quite interesting what is going on in Paris; there’s a wind of change in jewellery. Repossi, who supply the royal family in Monaco, now have two young designers who are 22 and 23 and jewellery designer Delfina Delettrez at Fendi has a team of young designers and they’re doing some really interesting stuff.”

The shift, according to Jank, is a mirror of what has happened in the fashion industry over the past decade where greater emphasis has been placed on young designers.

Take, for example, the 1997 appointment of Nicolas Ghesquiere as creative director of Balenciaga – now one of the hottest fashion labels in the world – at the ripe old age of 25. Or the arrival of flamboyant jewellery designer Victoire de Castellane to Christian Dior as artistic director of joaillerie the following year.

“Victoire de Castellane was the foremother of what has happened,” Jank says. “She came in and took toys as her inspiration and really made a difference. And the new Louis Vuitton jewellery is out of control. There’s a 30-carat diamond and for a company like Louis Vuitton to be doing fine jewellery when they haven’t done it before is a real mark of what’s happening.”

LV rocks

Luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton recently made its foray into fine jewellery. Right now in Sydney, Louis Vuitton is showing off its diamond pieces — the Louis Vuitton flower cut and the Louis Vuitton star cut. Both are inspired by the brand’s iconic monogram flowers.

The pieces are touring the world as part of the Les Ardentes fine jewellery collection and will remain in Australia until Monday.

Bling it on

Fairfax & Roberts aren’t the only ones embracing big, bold statement gems. Other local jewellers are also amping up the wow factor with the help of vivid rocks, edgy new shapes and fashion-fabulous pieces.

Stefano Canturi

Sydney jeweller Stefano Canturi doesn’t do understated. He is, after all, the man who created the $2 million platinum diamond choker worn by Satine (Nicole Kidman) in Moulin Rouge! (listed in the Guinness World Records as the most valuable piece of jewellery ever created for a movie). A bit of a darling in Hollywood circles, Canturi, whose signature is bold, modern pieces inspired by cubism, has also created one-off pieces for The Matrix and recently sent items to producers on set at the next Sex and the City movie for consideration. Oprah Winfrey also famously wore a pendant on the show, which she claims she never takes off. The latest from Canturi — who recently opened a store in Manhattan (there’s already one in Las Vegas) — is the Regina Collection, featuring white diamonds and black sapphires, and the Canturi Bridal collection, featuring engagement rings, wedding bands and a tiara fit for a princess. See canturi.com.

Jan Logan

Jan Logan is celebrating 20 years as one of our leading jewellers. She is marking the occasion with a new collection inspired by old-style Hollywood glamour — South Sea pearls, diamonds and colourful gems. Jan Logan is a favourite among the A-list — Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Watts, Kylie Minogue and Kate Bosworth have hit the red carpet in recent years in her signature jewels, which take their cue from Logan’s love of simple art deco pieces and Etruscan jewellery. See janlogan.com.au.

Cerrone

Nicola Cerrone is also about providing bang for your buck. Embracing the recent trend for coloured stones and innovative shapes, his latest collection, Passione 2009, features black diamonds, African tanzanite and stones from exotic lands including Colombia and Afghanistan. Cerrone, who has kitted out the likes of Jennifer Hawkins and Claudia Schiffer, recently opened a new flagship store in Sydney’s Martin Place, which he has dubbed the Via Condotti of Sydney. Blasblog From Paris: Feeling the Crush

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

In seasons past, a real fashion week crush happened just before a show started, when everyone had filed into the venue and was scrambling for their seats. But times have changed. Now the hoopla begins much sooner and lasts much longer. Take yesterday’s Dior show, which had PETA protesters crowding fur-clad attendees and accosting them with some pretty heavy commentary. (You would think the fashion gods would strike down anyone disparaging Carine Roitfeld—in a Joseph Altuzarra coat with furry fringe shoulders—right then and there, wouldn’t you?) Once through that maze, it was onto the dizzying array of Japanese street-style photographers who ask seemingly every well-heeled fashion editor to stop and pose. In the early days of the Sartorialist, a blogger would be fine with eye contact, but today they pose whole shots: Outside Dior, I saw one person drag an editor across the park to stand in front of a statue. And she did it. “I don’t mind,” she later told me, “because these are the only shots that matter now. Some of these pictures are better than what happens on the runway.” And she may be right—entire blogs are fueled by these images, establishing an entire generation of muses. And, don’t forget, after the PETA and blogger gauntlet, it’s on to the fashion show itself for the vintage crush we all know so well. Hey, no one said this industry was easy.

Sarah Jessica Parker In Lanvin & Chanel – “The Normal Heart” Broadway Opening Night

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

In New York City last night Sarah Jessica Parker attended the 2011 Brooklyn Artists Ball and “The Normal Heart” Broadway Opening Night with husband, Matthew Broderick.

As we saw in today’s WWIB poll, SJP likes to mix things up a bit.

She opted for a gorgeous Chanel Pre-Fall 2011 metallic tweed coat, over a Lanvin Spring 2011 bronzed olive ruched cocktail dress.

Both pieces complement each other so well.

It’s not often we see celebs create a look which consists of two pieces from different seasons.

Beachy waves and Manolo Blahnik black jewel encrusted heels completed SJP’s look.

Angelos Bratis Takes Italy’s Who Is On Next Prize

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Each July, fashion—the made-in-Italy kind, at least—moves south to Rome. The destination? Altaroma fashion week, Italy’s answer to haute couture, where acting President Silvia Venturini Fendi and Vogue Italia’s Franca Sozzani pick the womenswear winners of Italy’s annual Who is On Next young designer competition. (The men’s half of Who’s Next was held last month at Pitti in Florence.)The prestigious international jury, including Suzy Menkes, Saks Fifth Avenue’s Terron Schaefer and Harvey Nichols’ Averyl Oates, spent last Saturday in a sizzling-hot Rome reviewing the work of seven ready-to-wear labels and four accessories lines for the seventh edition of the prize, which rewards winners with a feature shoot by one of Vogue Italia’s photographers and a fashion-show slot during Milan fashion week in late September. (Yoox.com, Mercedes-Benz, and Alcantara offered their own supplemental prize.)Angelos Bratis (left), a Greek designer producing his collection in Italy, won first prize for his sleek, bias scarf-cut pieces inset with stars, while second prize went to Stella Jean, a Caribbean-Italian designer born in Rome, who created Euro-African mix of crisp pinstripe shirts and wax prints in modernized fifties hourglass shapes. Alessio Spinelli, whose eponymous shoe collection debuted in Rome this year, won the accessories prize for the innovative details of his Neon, collection like stiletto sandals with glow-in-the-dark-edged soles, or interchangeable shocking satin laces. Marta Ferri, who did a bright, floral-filled remix of fifties glamour, received the jury’s special mention.“It’s really amazing to participate in a competition like this,” said Bratis, who spoke during a private evening tour of the Vatican with the jury and journalists assembled for the prize, a rare treat negotiated by Silvia Fendi using all her intra-Roman connections. “All of a sudden you’re in a room with some of the people who you have always dreamed of showing your collection to. So there’s 15 minutes to explain what you’re doing. And then you realize that they understand everything and that an explanation really isn’t necessary.”
